Police are investigating the death of a New Kensington man who was shot while working a newspaper delivery route early Thursday morning.

Gregory L. Smith, 69, was driving on his paper route around 3 a.m. Thursday when he was shot on Kenneth Avenue, police said.

Three bullets of the same caliber were fired in Smith's direction, with one of the shots hitting the man in the head, police said.

Smith was able to drive one block before running into a fence, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

New Kensington police and the Westmoreland County Detective Bureau are investigating. They have not determined if Smith was the victim of a targeted shooting or a robbery.

"As far as we're aware, he was on his route delivering newspapers," New Kensington Police Chief Robert Deringer said.

The shooting was the area's second incident of gunfire in 48 hours. Police said there did not appear to be a connection.

"It's, like, unbearable. People can't even sleep, and the kids can't even play around here. You never know what's going to happen around here," said Don Graves, of New Kensington. "You walk down the street, you never know if you're going back home. Sometimes I don't even want to walk out the house, but I've got to do a job and I've got to go."
