WARREN (WWJ) - A man who was pulled from a burning home in Warren overnight has died.

Police noticed smoke coming from the rear of a home on Winslow Avenue, near I-696 and Van Dyke, around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday.

"Warren PD was in the area checking on an alarm and while he was checking on the alarm he smelled smoke. After driving around for a little bit, he found the house that was on fire," Fire Chief Tim Morgan told WWJ's Dan Jenkins. "He noticed that the front window was burned out on the door, he kicked in the door and noticed somebody on the floor to the right but he couldn't get to him, the smoke was too thick."

Firefighters arrived on scene, went inside and pulled the man from the home. The 55-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead from apparent smoke inhalation.

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.

"It looks like it was a heavy fire load in the back of the house," Morgan said.

The man's name has not yet been released.
