Man Charged After Police Standoff In Doral

Man Charged After Police Standoff In Doral A man is facing a number of charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer after a standoff with police in Doral Monday night. It started around 8 p.m. at The Manor condo/apartment complex near 84th Avenue and 33rd Street. Doral police say Sergio Van Kanten, 34, called 911 and said six armed men had broken into his apartment. When officers arrived, they heard several gunshots coming from inside the apartment. Officers kicked down the door and more shots were fired, according to the police. A Miami-Dade SWAT team was called for assistance.

Kalin Sunde, the woman who was originally believed to be a hostage in a standoff with police last week in Oconomowoc, was charged Tuesday with six felonies including bail jumping, fleeing police and striking a police animal using a dangerous weapon.

Sunde appeared in Waukesha County Circuit Court, where her bail was set at $70,000.

A criminal complaint from the Waukesha County District Attorney's Office said Sunde was more of a "co-actor" than a hostage in the standoff that shut down Interstate 94 for 12 hours. But her lawyer, Ben Van Severen, said after the court appearance that he still feels his client is a victim in this case.

StandOffs are designed to mount signs, architectural panels, glass, photographs, artwork and just about any other material at a fixed distance from a surface. They’re available in different shapes and sizes to accommodate any design.

The term felony originated from English common law (from the French medieval word "félonie"), to describe an offense that resulted in the confiscation of a convicted person's land and goods

The other person involved in the standoff was identified by police as Nathan Halfmann.

Halfmann and Sunde were parked in Kettle Moraine State Forest when they were approached by a warden with the state Department of Natural Resources, according to the criminal complaint.

When approached, Sunde "looked directly at the warden, shrugged her shoulders and smiled, then put the car into drive and drove off."

The criminal complaint also said Sunde admitted there was no baby in the van, saying the ruse was a negotiation tactic.

Police said the presence of a baby "limited what techniques (gas, ramming, etc.) could be used by law enforcement to get the suspects out of the car." Police used tear gas to get the pair out.

The van was stolen from one of Sunde's "clients"  — Sunde worked as an escort according to the complaint — who owed her $1,000. She and Halfmann planned on using the van to drive to Fond du Lac to sell "a half-ounce of cocaine, six to 14 grams of heroin and a smaller amount of meth," according to the complaint.

The criminal complaint also confirmed earlier reporting from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Halfmann and Sunde had a romantic relationship.

Last week, Sunde was in court for charges stemming from resisting arrest after she was taken into custody during the standoff.

Miami jury convicts cop of misdemeanor for shooting at autistic man but acquits on felonies.
MIAMI - A jury on Monday night convicted a North Miami police officer of a misdemeanor for firing his rifle three times at an autistic man holding a silver toy truck, but acquitted him of two more serious felony counts of attempted manslaughter. Jurors deliberated more than three hours in the case of Officer Jonathon Aledda, who admitted he mistook the shiny object for a weapon in a shooting that drew national outrage amid heightened criticism of police tactics. His bullets missed the autistic man but struck the man’s therapist, who was laying on the ground with his hands in the air.
