KALAMAZOO (WWJ) - Police in southwestern Michigan are investigating what's believed to be a murder-suicide involving a mother and her two children.

The bodies of three people, a 44-year-old woman and 9-year-old twin girls were recovered from the Kalamazoo River, according to Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Karianne Thomas.

The investigation began at around 10:45 a.m. Monday, Thomas said, when officers responded to a Walgreens on a call about some girls, under 10 years old, who were looking for their uncle.

Thomas told WWJ's Beth Fisher that many questions remain.

"We're really early on in the investigation and we just don't have any information what might have caused this woman to take such drastic measures, and what that pain was that would have her do that," Thomas said. "It's just a tragedy here in this community, and it's something that affects all of us. Not as deeply as the family, of course, but it truly affects a community the size of Kalamazoo."

The identities of all victims are being held until a positive identification can be made, along with family notification.
