$100,000 cash bail set for man charged in crash that killed off-duty officer Cash bail was set at $100,000 on Saturday morning for a man accused in a hit and run crash that killed an off-duty Milwaukee police officer. Dante James was escorted into the courtroom in a wheelchair as he faced a judge for the first time since his arrest. James was arrested after the deadly crash early Tuesday morning near the intersection of 60th Street and Capitol Drive. Police Chief Alfonso Morales identified the victim as Officer Kou Her. "It's so heartbreaking," said Her's older brother Kong Her. "My parents are going to be the ones burying him, when it should be the other way around." Morales said Her, 27, was a two-year veteran of the department.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Three people have been charged after a stolen Jeep struck and killed a man sitting at a bus shelter Sunday morning in the Jeffrey Manor neighborhood.

Michael Jordan, 27, was waiting for a bus at the corner of 99th and Van Vlissingen around 11:40 a.m. Sunday, when a white Jeep Cherokee plowed into the bus shelter, killing him.

No Bail For Man Charged In Fiery Crash That Killed 3, Including His Sister Deanton Thompson, 24, was charged with three felony counts of reckless homicide and four felony counts of leaving the scene of an accident. (Source: Cook County Sheriff) Killed in the crash were Thompson’s sister, 25-year-old Deseanell Thompson; 27-year-old Damon Patterson; and 25-year-old Jaron Patterson. Prosecutors said they were trapped in the back seat. Witness Jonique Bolls shot video of the desperate attempts to open the car door.

Police said the Jeep had been reported stolen a short time earlier near 101st and Crandon, and when officers spotted it, the SUV sped away. The driver lost control and smashed into the bus shelter at 99th and Van Vlissingen.

Police said the driver was arrested after a short foot chase. Two passengers in the Jeep also were arrested.

Leon Hearon, 30, has been charged with one felony count of reckless homicide and one felony count of unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. He also has been charged with misdemeanor counts of driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, and obstructing identification.

Hearon, who was convicted of criminal sexual assault as a juvenile, has a lengthy criminal record, including violating conditions of the sex offender registry, violating conditions of electronic monitoring and auto theft.

The two passengers – 48-year-old Riley Holmes III and 32-year-old Sasha Viverette – both were charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass to vehicle.

Hearon was due to appear for a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon. Viverette and Holmes were due to appear in court on Aug. 12.
