Matsueda said what made Al-Amin a good worker and a remarkable figure was that he would go out of his way to help people. No matter how crazy it got, nothing got to him —except systemic racism against young, black men.

Verdict Expected For Bronx Teen Charged With Stabbing Classmate To Death Prosecutors say Abel Cedeno killed 15-year-old Matthew McCree and injured 16-year-old Ariane Laboy at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation back in September 2017. Laboy ended up in a coma. Cedeno says he was acting in self-defense after being bullied because he’s gay. Last week, he took the stand to testify, saying the bullying turned physical on the day of the attack. “I began getting hit in the back of the head with broken pencils, pen caps and bunched up paper,” Cedeno said. “Matthew punched me on the cheek two or three times.

Adams entered a Circle K store just outside Phoenix on Thursday when he walked up behind Elijah Al - Amin , 17, and allegedly stabbed him on the right side After Adams was arrested, he told officers that Elijah "did not do anything to threaten him" and heard him listening to rap music in the parking lot.

Elijah Al - Amin ’s parents say he was driven — so much so that the 17-year-old worked two summer jobs ahead of his senior year, and was seeking a third. But when the young man got off work late Thursday and stopped by a Circle K convenience store in Peoria, Ariz., police say he was followed

But despite that, Al-Amin wasn't angry; he was out to prove himself, his friend said.

"He was very proud of being black and very proud of his family and his culture," Matsueda said. "We were talking about the future and business one day, and he was saying he wanted to show the world that a young black man could make it."

Part of the reason Al-Amin was so dedicated to getting into business was his dedication to his family, Mariah said.

"His main thing was he wanted to make money because he wanted to take care of us," she said, adding that she has another younger brother who is disabled.

Al-Amin was going into his senior year, and was thinking about heading into hotel management or helping out with the family business, which works with people with disabilities.

Al-Amin's would have turned 18 on July 28. Mariah said her family still wants to throw a party. They're going to rent a hall or similar; eat, listen to music and potentially release balloons or lanterns in his honor.

Mariah said the family also wants the incident labeled a hate crime.

"You hear about it all the time, and you never think it's going to be at your front door," she said. "We want justice. We want this man to be held responsible for his actions."
