NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is set to be sentenced today in Downtown Brooklyn.

Guzman was convicted in February of all 10 federal counts against him, following an 11-week trial.

Prosecutors said the 62-year-old earned nearly $14 billion as the alleged kingpin of the Sinaloa cartel, accusing him of funneling hundreds of tons of cocaine and other drugs into the United States during his 25-year reign. They also presented evidence that Guzman used hit squads to target rivals.

The defense, however, argued his role in the drug empire was exaggerated, claiming those who testified against him were lying to get leniency in their own cases.

In July, a federal judge denied the defense’s request for a new trial.

Guzman was extradited to the U.S. in 2017 and has been kept in solitary confinement under a close watch in New York after he was able to escape from prisons in Mexico.

The judge is expected to sentence him to life behind bars at a federal supermax prison in Colorado.

Many are waiting to see whether Guzman, who has kept quiet in court, will speak before learning his fate.
