Styles was transported to the Indian River County Jail on a $1,500 bond.

Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry said vendors frequently sell the berries in Fellsmere and there is an active economy for their harvest. Nobody without a permit should be harvesting the berries, he added.

Martin County deputies detained a man Monday who was picking palmetto berries with a group near farmland that was being investigated for a trespassing incident.

Jose Callejas, 57, of Indiantown, was approached by deputies who asked for his identification and stated they were investigating the farmland trespass near County Road 609, according to an arrest affidavit released Tuesday.

Callejas refused to show his identification and told deputies he would not speak with them until his boss arrived in the area, the report said.

Callejas was charged with resisting arrest without violence and released from the Martin County Jail on a $500 bond. It is unclear whether Callejas had a permit for the harvest of the saw palmetto berries.

Within the last two weeks, an additional 14 people in Southwest Florida were arrested in connection to the illegal harvest of saw palmetto berries.
