Kathleen Petrocco, 36, was found dead July 14 in her Brighton home, though authorities have not ruled how she died and her death remains under investigation.

Family members say police told them they are investigating Petrocco’s death as a suicide, but her family disagrees with that determination.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office would not provide more details about where and how she was found dead until the coroner officially releases her cause and manner of death, which is expected this week, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Paul Gregory said.

The investigation into Petrocco’s death is active, and detectives are looking into all angles, not just suicide, Gregory said. The coroner’s office has not returned multiple requests for comment.

During divorce proceedings, Petrocco wrote that she had been in a romantic relationship with Young since October 2018, according to an affidavit submitted in February. Kathleen Petrocco’s sister, Moira Sharkey, said the family has lost faith in the justice system as a result of her sister’s case. They hope to hire a private investigator once the files become public, she said.

Petrocco battled alcoholism the last few years as a result of the abuse, Sharkey said.

“The trauma she experienced is unparalleled,” Sharkey said.
