Cyntoia Brown is enjoying the freedom she could only dream about while serving a life sentence she received at 16 in the murder of a Nashville man.

"I am loving every single thing about being in my own home," Brown said in a statement to NBC News.

"Being able to cook for myself and decide how I want to spend my day feels amazing," the 31-year-old's statement to NBC News said. "Those simple pleasures that people take for granted are what I looked forward to when I sat in prison dreaming of freedom."

Brown left the Tennessee Prison for Women on Wednesday, Aug. 7 after being granted clemency by former Gov. Bill Haslam.

She was convicted in the 2004 murder of a 43-year-old Nashville real estate agent who, Brown said, picked her up outside a fast food restaurant for sex. She ended up serving 15 years of a life sentence for a crime she committed at age 16.

The high profile clemency case highlighted Tennessee's harsh sentencing laws and drew national attention when celebrities including Rihanna and Kim Kardashian West took to social media to decry her lengthy sentence.

She would not have been eligible for parole until she was 67 years old.

Institutionalized for nearly half her life, Brown will remain on parole for 10 years. Conditions of her parole include that she maintain employment or educational enrollment and that she participate in regular counseling sessions.

Brown told NBC News she has been enjoying simple pleasures like manicures and shopping for cooking supplies "whenever I need it."

She is also preparing for the release of her book in October.  "Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System," is based in her writings in prison, sharing details of her transformation, including "a profound encounter with God and an unlikely romance," according to the book's publisher Atria Books.

One of the attorneys for Cyntoia Brown says she’s committed to helping young people now that she’s been released from prison .

Brown, who wed Christian hip hop artist Jamie Long while in prison, also talked about the night she celebrated her release with those who had made a difference in her life during her incarceration.

"Every day I find myself thanking God for yet another experience I haven't had my whole adult life," she said in the statement.

Brown's memoir is scheduled to be published Oct. 15.
