Sides agree to extension in synagogue massacre case

Sides agree to extension in synagogue massacre case Prosecutors and lawyers for the man charged with killing 11 worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue last year have agreed to a 120-day extension in the case. The sides met briefly in federal court in Pittsburgh on Monday to review the status of Robert Bowers' prosecution. The defendant wasn't in court. Authorities say Bowers opened fire with an AR-15 rifle and other weapons during worship services inside Tree of Life synagogue. Bowers allegedly expressed hatred of Jews during the Oct. 27 rampage and later told police that "all these Jews need to die." It was the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history.

He was convicted of murder and spent 22 years in prison -- but now, in a new trial, a jury has found Scott Godesky, 48, not guilty of the killing.

Godesky walked out of the Allegheny County Courthouse on Tuesday after Judge Anthony Mariani ordered him to be uncuffed and said he was free to go.

"I didn't see that coming. Usually, they send you back," Godesky said. "And 23 years overdue, that's all I can really say.

"I just keep going back to one word: Overwhelming. I just didn't know what to say, what to do, anything. It's like I said, 23 years overdue."

Godesky and co-defendant David Lehrman were sentenced to life in prison for the 1996 shooting death of Brian Mirenna in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood.
