One driver was killed and another was injured Monday in a head-on crash in Sacramento, police said.
A Volvo and a Prius crashed around 3:40 p.m. on Howe Avenue near American River Drive, Sacramento police said. The Volvo was going the wrong direction on Howe Avenue when it collided with the Prius.
The driver of the Volvo died, police said. The driver of the Prius was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police said it is unclear why the Volvo driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Howe Avenue.
The Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to process the scene.
Officers closed Howe Avenue between American River and Swarthmore drives to investigate the crash. Traffic in the area is backed up.
The northbound lanes reopened before 6 p.m. The southbound lanes reopened around 7:30 p.m.
No other details were released.
