Fort Dodge police have identified the victim in a shooting that killed a 17-year-old high school senior.

Police said Wednesday morning that Daiqualis Poe, of Fort Dodge, was killed in the shooting.

Police say the shooting is still under investigation.

“No new information has developed overnight that we are able to share at this time,” police said.

Police responded around 12:34 p.m. to 721 N. Eighth Street in Fort Dodge, where the 17-year-old boy was found dead.

Authorities said the boy's family told police the gunshot wound came from an accidental shooting.

"We're just trying to cover all of our bases to make sure we get the clear picture of what truly happened here today," Fort Dodge police Capt. Ryan Gruenberg said.

Fort Dodge resident Missy Mueller said she and her neighbors stared in shock as Fort Dodge police and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agents flooded their street.

"It's been a very anxious, nervous day because I got three kids and not knowing what's going on and it happened right across the street," she said.

Police believe the teen's mother and young siblings were inside the house at the time of his death. It is unclear if family members were involved or witnessed the incident.

Officials with the Jones County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a reported shooting at Houston Road Apartments around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators with the sheriff’s office are still working to determine how the teen was injured but said they do believe the shooting was accidental .

"I don't really know them and stuff," Mueller said. "I see them outside all the time, barbecuing and enjoying family time, it seems like. I have never witnessed anything aggressive or violent."

DCI agents analyzed the scene of the shooting late into the evening. Police said they plan to interview the family members once they have had time to calm down.

"It's certainly a sad day when a 17-year-old boy loses his life in a tragic event like this," Gruenberg said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to everybody who is involved in this. We hope to provide some answers."

Authorities said they plan to release the teenager's name Wednesday and that they do not believe the public is in danger.
