It happened south of Terrace Hill near a homeless encampment west of the MLK Bridge over the Raccoon River.

Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek said officers were following up on a complaint about the homeless camp in that area. Officers found multiple people named in warrants and while dealing with them, they encountered a man in his 30s who wasn't cooperative.

People who leave donations at homeless camps face charges, police say Dozens of people are living in the woods outside Sanford, but police say they will charge those who leave supplies to help them. According to Sanford police, anyone caught leaving clothes or donations at homeless camp sites will be charged with littering. Instead, officers suggest donating to a homeless charity. There is no homeless shelter in Sanford, but the town has recently increased efforts to curb homelessness including offering medical care, garbage disposal and portable toilets. Littering is a civil offense and subject to a fine of $500 to $1,000 depending on the amount deposited.

Parizek said the man jumped into the river. When he exited the river, he ran to the camp, initially arming himself with a shovel. As the man advanced to the officers, he dropped the shovel and armed himself with a "large machete-style knife" according to police. That's when one officer fired multiple shots.

Parizek said the man was shot in the upper torso but was alert and conscious when transported to a hospital for treatment.

The identity of the suspect has not been released, but police say he is expected to survive. The identity of the officer also has not been released.
