Martinez was pronounced dead less an hour later and authorities released surveillance video of the violent and seemingly random stabbing. Police credited tips prompted by the security clips for their speedy arrest of Crawford, who was taken into custody within 48 hours of the deadly attack.

According to court documents, he has a history of mental illness and drug use.

During his sentencing on Friday, Martinez’s fiancé, Daniel Hincapie, told Crawford he does not harbor any ill will and urged him to grow during his time behind bars, WJLA reported.

“I do not wish you anything bad,” he said. “On the contrary, my desire is that you approach God during your years in prison.”

Hincapie proposed to Martinez on Sept. 12, 2018 — less than a week before she was murdered.

“She was my love, my partner my dream come true,” Hincpapie said in court.

Martinez’s mother, Cora, said the attack had been the “worst nightmare” she’s ever experienced but has similarly said she’s forgiven Crawford.

“I just want to say that for us, it’s important that we hear and forgive him,” she said.

“We hope he finds peace in the middle of this storm he has created for himself, for this life. And we know Wendy is in better place, so that gives us a sense of, as Daniel said, relief. And we hope he finds the gift of salvation.”
