  Toddler Dies After Being Left in Car With Heater on For 5 Hours While Mother Allegedly Drank With Friend in West Carson Authorities are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl who was left in a car with the heater on and windows rolled up for more than five hours while her mother drank with a friend nearby, records show. June Love Augusto died at a hospital on Sept. 23 after she was found unconscious inside her mother's vehicle, which was parked in the 22400 block of South Vermont Avenue in the unincorporated county area of West Carson during the early-morning hours, according to a reports issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

On Monday, October 7, the Department of Community Supervision, the Habersham Sheriff's Office and the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) executed a search warrant at a residence in the 400 block of Harrison Trail in Alto.

A quantity of marijuana, methamphetamine, a little over $3,000 cash, multiple firearms -- one of them confirmed to have been stolen -- and other narcotics were seized from the address.

Five people were arrested and charged in conjunction with the seizures:

  • Edward Jack Ruiz, 20, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
  • Jacqueline Hernandez, 56, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
  • Leonel Hernandez Guerrero, 37, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
  • Jose Peter Arguelles, 23, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
  • Jose Heard, 20, was charged with violation of probation.

ARDEO is a multi-agency task force that includes sheriff's offices from White County, Lumpkin County, Towns County, Banks County, Jackson County, Habersham County, Stephens County, Rabun County and Franklin County, along with the Cleveland Police Department, Lavonia Police Department, the Toccoa Police Department, the Georgia National Guard Counter Drug Task Force, the Georgia Department of Public Safety and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The National Park Service says a bust of Orville Wright that was stolen from the Wright Brothers National Memorial on the North Carolina coast has been found. A news release from the park service Tuesday says a visitor to the beach at Kill Devil Hills called authorities in Dare County to say the bust was tucked into some dunes.The park service said initially that the monument was damaged either Saturday evening or Sunday morning. The granite base on which the bust was mounted had been toppled and damaged.An investigation continues into the theft as well as damage to the granite base.
