YONKERS - A swearing-in ceremony was held Tuesday  for new Yonkers Police Commissioner John J. Mueller. 

The ceremony for the veteran lawman was held at the Riverfront Library. Mueller was named commissioner after his predecessor, Charles Gardner, announced his retirement earlier this year. 

Mueller's emergence into the position comes after the city saw a drop in serious crimes in 2018.

"It's usually not about violent crime," Mueller said at the ceremony, adding that it's really more about quality of life.

Mueller has served more than 20 years in the Yonkers Police Department, during which he has held numerous positions, according to a statement from the mayor's office. Recently, Mueller served as commanding officer of the Investigative Services Bureau, the department responsible for investigative activities within the Yonkers Police Department.

He holds master's and bachelor's degrees from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Police Executive Research Forum and John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Today, the FCC formally approved the contested T-Mobile and Sprint merger, The Vergereports. But commissioners are still speaking out. Commissioners Jessica Rosenworcel and Geoffrey Starks released statements explaining their decisions to vote against the transaction.
