The move comes as the department begins to take in more female inmates from surrounding counties.

ICE has been under contract with Suffolk County to use its facilities for detainees since 2003.

About 200 illegal immigrants are being housed at the South Bay House of Correction.

Sheriff Steven Tompkins said he wants to move them elsewhere and is giving ICE 60 days to make that happen. He wants to provide rehabilitation services to more women who will soon be housed at the facility.

Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign has canceled all appearances and events until further notice following a procedure for an artery blockage.

The female inmates are headed there as part of a new agreement among several counties.

Tompkins said focusing on the inmates will allow them to better deal with domestic and substance abuse issues.

"We take pride in the services that we have been able to provide to ICE detainees," Tompkins said in a statement. "But we are elated about this new opportunity to expand our services across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reach more women with our dedicated programming so that we can begin to work on their recovery, address some the issues that first led them into the system, and return them to society better able to care for themselves and their families."

The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts applauded the sheriff's decision but said it would be a "disservice" to Massachusetts families if the decision led to the creation of new detention space or resulted in detainees losing access to their families and legal representation.

ICE called the plan to move "high level criminals" out of South Bay a major setback. Officials told the Herald that it will have a huge impact on their operations because the jail is close to Logan International Airport.

ICE officials declined to be interviewed but released a written statement: "U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston was disappointed to learn of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s decision to end their longstanding, cooperative partnership agreement with our agency.

"ICE has enjoyed a positive working relationship with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and we believe this partnership between Suffolk County and ICE has been mutually beneficial to the residents of Suffolk County the last 13 years."

The detainees may now end up in other counties or states. An exact plan is unclear.

The South Bay jail currently houses about 1,200 inmates, of which about 200 are ICE detainees and nearly 100 are female inmates.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
