Greenville police Officer Thomas Moore, who responded to the crash, went over for the judge the results of the investigation.

Moore said that Gardner was in a Chrysler PT Cruiser when he cut off another driver who blew his horn at him before he got into the turn lane on Rutherford Road to turn left onto North Pleasantburg Drive.

Moore described in detail how Gardner "flipped off" the other driver and started driving aggressively in order to catch up with him.

When Gardner got behind the other driver, he shifted from fifth gear into third gear to pass the vehicle, at which point Gardner lost control of his car, Moore said.

The PT Cruiser hit a curb, went up on the sidewalk and hit Welfred, according to police.

"There were 189 feet of tire marks in the roadway before he actually left the roadway," Moore said.

Video from the Ace Hardware store across the street from the crash scene allowed police to do a study to calculate the time and distance involved in the crash, according to Moore.

Road - rage driver, 50, arrested after she 'ran terrified woman off the road claiming to be a cop' days after being jailed for another crash . California driver Deidre Orozco, 50, is back in jail after she attempted to run two young women off I-80 near Sacramento.

The crash came to an end at the intersection of Gallatin Pike North and Old Hickory Boulevard in Madison. The truck struck a Cheatham County patrol car, not injuring the officers. The truck also tried to swerve at another officer near the Davidson County border, but did not injure that officer either.

Moore said Gardner was driving 75 mph before he lost control, which is 30 miles over the posted speed limit. Moore said the speed at the time of impact was 58 mph.

The force of the crash cut a utility pole in half, police said.

The city attorney Leigh Paoletti said the exceptional set of facts of the case "underscore what an egregious case of reckless driving this was with just about the worse possible consequence that we could have." She pressed the judge for Gardner to receive jail time.

Gardner and his attorney asked the judge for leniency, saying he worked in aviation at Donaldson Field, and hasn't had a traffic ticket in four to five years.

In the end, the judge sided with the city and the Hallens family.

"I'm shocked at this case," Hawley said. "It's the worst case of road rage that I've seen in the 23-plus years here on the bench."

"I hope for your sake, and more importantly, I hope for this young man's sake, that he survives this incident, because, quite frankly, if he does not make it, you could be charged with additional very serious crimes," Hawley said.

To "cut a telephone pole in two with your vehicle when you left the roadway -- the speed and force that's necessary to do that is phenomenal and it's just something that I have difficulty to abide," Hawley said.

Gardner was handcuffed and led out of the courtroom by a police officer, and will be held in the Greenville County Detention Center until he has served his time.
