Attorneys were expected to deliver closing arguments in the case Tuesday, but the schedule was interrupted by Njuguna’s outburst at the start of the day.

"I'm very sorry, it was an accident. I’m very sorry," he said.

Njuguna's outburst also seemed to criticize his own defense attorney, Peter Ettenberg.

“There’s no need to go any further,” Njuguna also said. “I’m very sorry for what happened. I’m very sorry Mrs. (Reisa) Clardy for what happened. But, your honor, he (Mr. Ettenberg) told me not to say anything. I want to apologize to Mrs. Clardy.”

Judge Janet Kenton-Walker attempted to interrupt the 5-minute outburst.

"Listen to me, if you can't follow my instructions, I'm going to ask you to leave the courtroom," Kenton-Walker said.

Njuguna, however, continued and Kenton-Walker ordered officers to remove him from the courtroom.

On March 16, 2016, Clardy had pulled over a vehicle on Interstate 90 west in Charlton when his cruiser, which was parked in the breakdown lane, was struck from behind by a Nissan Altima that prosecutors said Njuguna was driving.

Clardy, a 44-year-old husband and father of seven from Hudson, was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Medical Center shortly after the crash.

A Massachusetts State Police forensic scientist has testified that Njuguna had THC in his bloodstream at the time of the crash. Prosecutors argue he was intoxicated on the drug at the time of the crash.

Monday, a doctor who testified for the defense told the judge he believes Njuguna suffered some sort of "convulsive episode" prior to the crash.
