Capital Gazette shooter will still have to stand trial to determine sanity despite guilty plea

Capital Gazette shooter will still have to stand trial to determine sanity despite guilty plea Despite pleading guilty to murdering five staffers at the Capital Gazette newspapers, the gunman’s fate still rests in the hands of a jury. An Anne Arundel County jury is to decide whether Jarrod Ramos will be locked up in a state prison or committed to Maryland’s maximum-security psychiatric hospital. On Monday, the 39-year-old Laurel man changed course to plead guilty to murdering Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, Rebecca Smith, Wendi Winters and John McNamara in the Annapolis office last year. Ramos had previously pleaded not guilty and not criminally responsible — Maryland’s version of the insanity plea.

Prosecutors think McGuire killed both women so he could get money to keep buying drugs. Also, they think the neighbor got in the way because she kept asking questions about her missing friend.

Trial to Be Postponed for Capital Gazette Shooter

Trial to Be Postponed for Capital Gazette Shooter A trial will be postponed for a man who pleaded guilty to killing five people at the Capital Gazette newspaper's offices in Maryland last year. Jarrod Ramos pleaded guilty on Monday after previously pleading not guilty and not criminally responsible, in Maryland's version of an insanity defense. A jury still will determine whether he was responsible for his actions because of the insanity his defense claims.

He pleaded guilty Thursday in an agreement with prosecutors, and a judge gave him credit for about six months already served in jail. He was released on Thursday night. Video shows the two trading insults on their properties in Greenwood on June 27 before Weigle — apparently riding a lawnmower

Video captured by a Ring doorbell camera on the Rosedale home of one of the victims led to McGuire becoming a suspect.

"There are no words to describe the heinousness of the crimes he committed," Stacy Amparo, Baltimore County Assistant State's Attorney, said.

"I'm glad we were able to come to a resolution. I feel for all of the families that were involved," McGuire's defense attorney Gayle Robinson said.

Some family members of the victims said they were not totally satisfied with the investigation and prosecution.

"I'm glad he pleaded out and that he's guilty. He wouldn't look at us in court because he knows he's guilty," Dianna Hill, Slebzak's sister-in-law, said.

Prosecutors said McGuire was on probation for burglary when he moved in with Slebzak on Roseland Avenue in Rosedale. He then decided he wanted the house to himself and wanted her gone, so he intentionally overdosed her with cocaine, fentanyl and morphine, and put her body in a cedar chest at the end of her bed.

A San Diego man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the stabbing deaths of his mother and his younger sister, officials say. Brian Rockwell Williams, 24, was arrested Monday after the bodies of his police detective mother Donna Williams, 52, and sister Briana, 18, were found at their home, The San Diego

Investigators didn't find out about that until weeks later when they looked into Testerman's murder. She was found in the kitchen of her home, stabbed in the neck and chest. Her doorbell recorded video of McGuire entering her home and also taking her car. McGuire admitted killing both women and stealing their credit cards. He believed Testerman was asking too many questions about the disappearance of her friend.

"The primary motivation in our estimation was narcotics, and it goes to show the length someone will go to get a fix. The amount of thought and effort it took was horrifying," Jackson Protzman, Baltimore County Assistant State's Attorney, said.

McGuire is due back in court Dec. 12 for sentencing. Prosecutors are requesting he serve two consecutive life terms in prison.
