San Francisco police have been assisting Contra Costa County investigators in the case and working to determine if the Orinda shooting was motivated by retaliation over the 2015 slayings, sources with knowledge of the investigation told The Chronicle.

The San Francisco Police Department referred all questions to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, the lead agency in the investigation. The sheriff’s office has not commented on a motive for the violence that shocked the community of Orinda.

Investigators have not arrested any suspects or described what they believe happened when gunfire erupted at around 10:50 p.m. at the home at 114 Lucille Way. Officials said the home was rented on Airbnb and the gathering of around 100 people was promoted on social media as a “mansion party.”

Police found three dead victims at the scene, and two more victims died at hospitals. At least four other people were injured in the melee, officials said.

The violence drew outrage from residents in Orinda who said they had complained numerous times to the city about unruly parties at the home. Over the weekend, Airbnb responded and said it was taking steps to ban party houses.

Authorities said they were trying to determine whether two guns found inside the house were used in the shooting and were analyzing bullet casings.

Police described the shooting as gang-related, but did not elaborate on the circumstances or a motive for the attack. But more than a year later, in July 2016, police arrested then-27-year-old Lee Farley Jr. and charged him with four counts of murder in the shooting. Farley Jr., who has an extensive criminal record, was in custody at a federal lockup in Atwater (Merced County) when he was charged in the Hayes Valley case.

He is currently in San Francisco County Jail, awaiting trial.

Wendell Hogan, Tiyon Farley’s grandfather, said his grandson and Lee Farley Jr. were half brothers. He said his grandson was about to become a father for the first time and that his mother had died a few years ago.

“He was excited to an extent and he was worried too,” Hogan said.

Tiyon and Lee Farley Jr.’s father, Lee Farley Sr., also fell victim to gun violence. In July 2010, the elder Farley was gunned down outside a San Francisco nightclub called Jelly’s Dance Café.

Tiyon Farley was childhood friends with Hill Jr., and unexpectedly ran into him at the Orinda party, Hill Jr.’s father, Raymon Hill Sr., told The Chronicle.

Hill Jr. was paroled in San Francisco on July 8, 2019, after being sentenced to six years in state prison for two counts of assault with a firearm, according to officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Hill Jr. had a child and his girlfriend was five months pregnant. The family is raising money to pay for funeral expenses.
