“We lost our entire string inventory, everything,” he said. “About four double-basses, 10 cellos, eight violas, 20 nice violins, and another 15 instruments, or so."

The storage facility is located just north of he Broward County line and detectives tracked down many of the instruments at pawn shops around Broward and Palm Beach County, but Fraley does not know if they are damaged or how much it will cost to get them back.

“According to the detective, in the state of Florida, you have to pay the pawn shops to get your stolen property back, which seems outrageous,” he said. “We did have insurance. We filed a claim through the insurance company and we’re waiting to hear if [they] will pay to get the instruments back."

The Youth Orchestra has about 225 kids and been around for 26 years, he said. It offers several music performance programs to children ranging in age from five to 22.

“We’re not going to stop what we’re doing,” Fraley said. “This is just a small bump in the road and we’re hoping we’ll be able to make a positive out of this negative.”
