Two people are in police custody after a Denton police officer was shot and critically wounded during an officer-involved shooting early Tuesday. The shooting took place just after midnight on the 1800 block of West University Drive. It began when officers pulled over a vehicle for an equipment violation, police said. During that stop, there was an exchange of gunfire, officials said. The Denton officer was shot and a back-up officer shot back at the suspects, Assistant Police Chief Bobby Smith said during a news conference early Tuesday.

A Dayton police detective shot while serving a warrant as part of a DEA task force was shot twice, said Chief Richard Biehl.

The detective was identified as Jorge Del Rio. He is a 30-year veteran of the police department, Biehl said.

Del Rio remains in critical condition, with Biehl describing his injuries as “grave” and saying the detective is on “advanced life support.”

A Colorado Springs police officer was shot and critically injured early Thursday morning.

The main shooter in the investigation is Nathan Scott Goddard Jr., said David DeVillers, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Ohio.

Del Rio was going down stairs inside a home in the 1400 block of Ruskin Road when a suspect fired at the detective.

He was able to fire his weapon, but Del Rio was the only person shot during the incident, Biehl said.

Detectives wore wearing body armor and clothing identifying them as law enforcement officers. They knocked on the door and announced that they had a search warrant shortly before 7 p.m. Monday.

A medic was requested, but officers drove him to Grandview Medical Center in a marked cruiser due to the severity of the detective’s injuries.

Four adult men were found in the house and juvenile male attempted to flee, Biehl said.

The SWAT officer shot and critically wounded while trying to serve a warrant at an Ohio apartment was identified Monday as a 27-year veteran of the Columbus Police Department. Officer Steven M. Smith, 54, remains in critical condition at OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Fox 28 reports.

Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein called the incident “yet another tragedy” and “a difficult period for this city.”

She asked the community for their continued support of Dayton police and said thoughts and prayers are with the department and the officer’s family.

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. called the incident “an assault on this community.”

Heck was one of the first people who reached out to Biehl this morning, the chief said.

Biehl praised Del Rio’s work as a detective and said that was loved by all at the department and had a great reputation with other lawn enforcement agencies.

Keith Martin, a regional DEA agent said that the task force that Del Rio was part of was responsible for saving many lives by intercepting drugs.


Dayton police will give an update regarding a detective who was shot and injured while serving a warrant with a DEA task force Monday evening.

A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m.
