Holt’s attorney, Tim Dawson, finished his closing arguments and urged the jury to not render a verdict on emotion. Dawson argued there is no physical evidence tying Holt to this case and questioned the credibility of some of the witnesses called to testify.

Emotional statements were made inside the courtroom Wednesday at the first day of the sentencing hearing for Holt.

Shaw's mother, Lisa, and brother, Steffan, were among those testifying Wednesday in the penalty phase of Holt's trial at the Westmoreland County Courthouse.

"Brian was my rock, and now he's my angel. I will never forgive you for what you did to him," said Lisa Shaw.

"The world is full of evil, and I have seen it every day at work. Now it's right in front of me in this courtroom," said Steffan Shaw, a Penn Hills police officer.

Holt showed no emotion in the courtroom. His defense team called on a childhood neighbor to speak about Holt's difficult upbringing as a child, hoping to show Holt's actions were a result of that upbringing.
