The bridge is the oldest in the state, built in 1820 on the route from Greenville to Asheville.

DNR officers said the vandalism likely took multiple days. The person(s) responsible used bright colors to paint the stones inside the arc of the bridge.

The Greenville County Sheriff's office is also investigating. Deputies said a malicious damage report was filed Friday regarding the bridge.

The victim plunged off a cliff in Hasbrouck Park, a few miles north of Poughkeepsie, around 9:50 p.m Monday. "The student had been part of an unsanctioned hiking group that were exploring the old cement caves and trails," the Kingston Police Department said in a statement. The A 20-year-old college student fell to her death during a hike in upstate New York, authorities said Tuesday.

Sightseers visiting the bridge said they were disappointed to see the damage.

"I can’t believe someone wants to come and vandalize anything like this. It’s so beautiful and it’s such a part of history that it doesn’t make sense that anyone would want to mess it up," said Greenville County resident Sandra Bever.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the SCDNR at 1-800-922-5431.
