In surveillance video shared by authorities, a girl can be seen approaching a group of about eight teens when one of them, wearing a white hoodie and red baseball cap, pushes her away with his right hand. A scuffle ensues a short time later when an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer intervened.

The robbery victim returned to Bay Street mall around 8 p.m. Friday after her phone had been stolen and she found a group of juveniles who she believed were associates of the person who took her phone, Emeryville police said in a statement.

In surveillance video shared by authorities, a girl approaches a group of about eight teens when one of them, wearing a white hoodie and red baseball cap, pushes her away with his right hand. A second teen then towers over the girl. The video doesn’t contain audio.

The confrontation continues, even as at least one person tries to hold back one of the aggressors. The male teen pushes the person’s hand away and pulls up his pants before shoving the girl again.

A man in a blue jacket and black pants who apparently works as a CHP officer walks over to the girl and tries to break up the confrontation to no avail. The girl points out several of the teens while the man seems to take a picture with his phone — seconds later the teen in the white sweater takes off his cap, tosses it on the ground and charges at the man.

Several people attempt to hold him back, but the teen breaks away and runs toward the man in the blue jacket, who lowers his shoulder and intercepts a blow to his head.

Multiple teens then try attacking the man, throwing punches and chasing him around a shopping center courtyard as security personnel intervene.

The teens struck the off-duty officer several times and choked him unconscious, police said. When the officer regained consciousness, he pepper sprayed one of the juveniles.

Emeryville officers arrived and broke up the brawl, but the CHP officer was “beaten up pretty good,” Emervyille police Capt. Oliver Collins said.

Two teens, ages 14 and 16, were arrested. Authorities booked them into Alameda County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and battery inflicting serious bodily injury, Collins said.

Authorities are still looking for six others involved in the fracas.

“We are not releasing a whole lot of information,” Collins said, citing the condition of the victims and the suspects’ ages.
