GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Police arrested a 17-year-old Grand Rapids student Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Union High School after a handgun was recovered from his backpack, according to Grand Rapids Police Department.

Sgt. John Wittkowski said police responded to the school, located at 1800 Tremont Blvd. NW, at approximately 11:15 a.m. to a report of a student with a firearm. He said officers with the Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Public Safety Department had already detained the student and confiscated the weapon.

Multiple police cars and ambulances are at the school on East Roberta Avenue. Waukesha police are calling the response a "critical incident." "The building is safe and secure," police tweeted. "The suspect is in custody." Officers said it was an "isolated incident" and they were not seeking any other suspects. "We are in the investigative stage right now as the scene is stabilized," police tweeted.News Chopper 12's Matt Salemme said he saw at least 17 police vehicles at the scene.Students have not been evacuated from the school.

Wittkowski said the student, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, was placed into custody pending criminal charges and would be held at the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center.

In a Wednesday letter to parents, Union Principal Aaron Roussey said a student notified the Public Safety Department about being threatened by another student.

Roussey said the student in question was pulled from class and placed into custody and as part of that investigation the gun was found in the backpack.

As a precautionary measure, he said the school was placed in a temporary Code Yellow lock down until the student was removed from the building by the police.

Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack spoke with the media and indicated around 10:15 a.m., a student at the school reported that another student brought a handgun to school — and was in possession of it. A Student Resource Officer (SRO) immediately responded to the classroom where the suspect student was located.Officials say the SRO made efforts to secure the classroom by getting the other students to safety. Other Waukesha officers also responded to the school.

"We have a zero-tolerance policy towards violence or threats of violence,'' Roussey said.

“Please know that all appropriate disciplinary action has been taken in accordance with our Uniform Discipline Code. The Grand Rapids Police Department and Grand Rapids Public Schools Public Safety will continue to investigate this incident, and additional disciplinary action, including expulsion and prosecution, may be taken pending the outcome.”

Roussey urged parents and guardians to use this incident as an opportunity to remind their children that if they have any information regarding threats or acts of violence at school to contact an adult immediately.

They were also urged to discuss with their children the importance of telling an adult right away if they ever feel threatened at school or in the community.

GRPS is directing parents wishing to discuss the situation further to contact the district’s Public Safety Department at 616-819-2100.
