CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- A man from New York is behind bars after a crash in Macomb County claimed the life of his seven-year-old son early Sunday morning.

Police tell WWJ a 32-year-old man from Sodus, New York, was driving eastbound on Hall Road near Heydenreich Road just after midnight when the crash occurred. Witnesses said the man was driving his Kia Optima on the paved shoulder of Hall Road and continued in that lane as it transitioned into a right turn lane for southbound Heydenreich.

Authorities say the man drove through the intersection, struck a curb and slammed into a pole which suspends traffic signals.

Around 3:10 a.m. Friday, the pedestrian was in the roadway in the 1200 block of U Street, Northwest. Police said a dark colored SUV traveling east hit the pedestrian, then fled the scene. Emergency officials responded and took the victim to a hospital. Police said the victim later died. Police haven't released the victim's identity. They're waiting for the next of kin notification. This incident is currently under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call police at (202) 727-9099.

The seven-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for multiple injuries.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash and the driver was taken into police custody. Authorities did not say why the New York man was in the area.

Eastbound Hall and Heydenreich form a T-shaped intersection, and at the time of the crash, it was being controlled by blinking yellow lights for Hall and blinking red for Heydenreich, according to police. The speed limit in that area of Hall is posted at 50 mph.

Authorities say the boy's body was taken into the custody of the Macomb County Medical Examiner. Clinton Township Police are still investigating and are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Detective Sgt. C. Madajczyk at (586)493- 7890 or traffic Sgt. C. Allis (586)615-2525.
