Detectives said they took up the cold case in 2019, and that “advances in technology” led them to a woman in Montana. A DNA sample was obtained and the Washington State Patrol’s crime lab found it to be a match with Baby Dawn, detectives said Wednesday.
The woman died in 2019. Detectives said that as a result, no criminal charges will be filed. They declined to name the suspect “out of consideration for the woman’s family.”

“Dawn,” as she became known, was laid to rest in an April 2007 ceremony at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard, thanks to a donation of a burial plot by Rill Chapel, Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home. Five women — Diane DeMulling, Vicki Chang, Nancy Williams, Sharon Floyd and Joyce Kohler — made quilts to go inside of Dawn's casket. Dozens of people, none of whom knew the baby or her family, attended.
"Unfortunately, a mother didn't want her," Sandstrom said at the service. "But from the group here today, you can see she was wanted."
The case was reopened in 2019. Sheriff’s detectives did not say what advances helped to discover a new suspect. But they ultimately got a DNA sample from a 32-year-old female who lived in Flathead County, Montana. They did not say if it was that of the suspect’s or a family member. But the office said the odds are one in 600 quadrillion that the matched DNA would be unrelated.
