BRIDGETON – A city man was found guilty Thursday of aggravated manslaughter and five other offenses in the death of a 9-year-old Bridgeton girl who was gunned down as she slept in her bed.

The verdicts came after four hours of deliberations and capped a two-week trial for 21-year-old Leroy Frazier III in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Frazier, a resident of 187 Irving Avenue, is one of four men charged in the Jennifer "Chikis" Trejo case. He was tried individually.

The four are charged with murder in the July shooting death of Jennifer Trejo of Bridgeton . Authorities have charged a fourth man in connection with the July shooting death of a 9 - year - old Elliott was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 2013 following his guilty plea to a gun charge.

Frazier faces a mandatory term of life in prison without parole based on his prior criminal history, county Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae said.

Trials are pending for three co-defendants, Webb-McRae said.

Frazier was indicted in December 2018 on seven charges: First-degree murder; first-degree conspiracy to commit murder; first-degree criminal attempt/murder; second-degree aggravated assault; third-degree aggravated assault; second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun; and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

On Thursday, the jury found Frazier guilty of a lesser charge of first-degree aggravated manslaughter, instead of murder. He was found not guilty on the charge of unlawful possession of a weapon. Frazier was found guilty on the remaining charges.

The fatal shooting took place on July 17, 2018 in Bridgeton sometime before 12:24 a.m.

In previous court hearings and court documents, authorities describe the fatal shooting as spillover from a sneak attack on a group of men made on a crowd of people standing on a porch of a house at 15 Elmer St. No one at the house that was attacked was wounded, police said.

Authorities at the time said at least 19 bullets were fired from multiple pistols. One bullet traveled an estimated 500 feet from that incident to the Trejo family home at 66 Church Street.

Trejo was asleep in a bed. One bullet went through the wall on the west side of her house and hit her on the left side near her rib cage. She died of the wound shortly afterward.

Judge Robert Malestein has scheduled sentencing for Feb. 21.
