Police said Officer Fredette told Daniels to drop the knife, but when Daniels refused, Fredette shot him.

Police said Daniels then lunged at officer Fredette, so he fired a second shot. Daniels died on scene.

Cocoa police Chief Mike Cantaloupe defended the actions of his officer during a news conference Thursday.

"Had our officer not acted in the way he did and not done the things that he did we truly believe that the victim in this case would have been severely injured or deceased."

Police said the woman involved was stabbed multiple times in the neck, but was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

Daniels family said they still believe the officer shouldn't have shot him.

"Why didn't the officer go for the taser first? When somebody has a weapon you're supposed to say put your weapon down and if they don't tase them and then if they try to strike you that's when you shoot them. He didn't even go for the taser, Daniel's cousin Dealizevia Jordan said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
