"It is with regret and disappointment that I share these pictures of our vandalized sign," Gregorius said in the letter, which was also posted on the church's Facebook page. "Sometime in the night of January 17, 2020, someone decided to take their anger out on our parish sign."

"It is the abominable act of small minds and insecurity," she said. "We are a people who preach the words of 'Jesus to Fear not,' and we will live into those words as we prepare to replace our sign."

Jackie Burton, a Pleasantville communications consultant, said Sunday that the incident has not been determined to be a hate crime.

Burton noted that an investigation is ongoing and that a hate crime may still be considered because the vandalism happened at a house of worship.

The broken sign was found two weeks after a rash of vandalism in Yorktown, which included a toppled menorah at Veterans' Field; four shattered glass doors that were at the Yorktown Stage; and broken windows at St. Patrick's Old Stone Church, First Presbyterian Church; the John C. Hart Memorial Library; and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Mohegan Lake.

Yorktown police said they're investigating those acts of vandalism as hate crimes.

State Sen. Pete Harckham issued a statement Saturday night calling the act of vandalism to the Pleasantville church "a serious crime and an affront to its residents."

"The recent wave of destruction and defacement aimed at houses of worship, including those that post the rainbow Pride flag and religious symbols, in the Hudson Valley and across our nation cannot be tolerated nor waved away as mindless mischief," Harckham said in his statement. "I know an investigation is taking place, but it’s time for all of us to come together and determine what needs to be done in order to drive hate from our communities.”
