The girl would, at times, turn to her father with red, puffy eyes and rest her head on his shoulder as they sat before the judge.

The hearing was set to continue Friday after prosecutors and the girl’s lawyer, Terrance Windham, spent about seven hours questioning two Houston police detectives on the extent of her role in the gang-related shooting and whether she knew Mack would be killed.

Both sides picked apart her social media, who she was dating and when.

The girl shared a class with 17-year-old Mack on the morning of the shooting and was with him just before he was killed. Authorities believe she led two gunmen to his location, a secluded area about a block from the River Oaks-area school.

She and another girl were walking with Mack to get food moments before the shooting, taking a direction away from where Mack was scheduled to be picked up by a relative.

The girl charged with murder ran away as a vehicle approached the group, without warning the other teens to flee, police said.

“She ran before the bullets were flying,” Detective Adam Bock testified.

She was not visible in the surveillance footage that captured the shooting.

Over the course of multiple interviews, the teen girl repeatedly attributed her quick departure to not wanting to be late for class.

The other girl with Mack was grazed by the gunfire, officials said.

During the hearing, Detective Travis Miller testified that the girl deleted from her phone several text messages between her and one of the suspected shooters, Kendrick Johnson, known to law enforcement as a member of Houston’s 100 Percent Third Ward (103) gang.

One of the messages, from Johnson, urged the girl to not discuss “what we talked about,” officials said.

According to testimony, Johnson and the girl were believed to be together the night before Mack was killed. Their communications continued after Johnson’s arrest for a traffic offense in December 2018 with phone calls from the Harris County Jail, prosecutors said.

Johnson was charged in Mack’s death in March 2019 while in custody.

An exchange of text messages between her and Mack were also found, sent in the two weeks before he was gunned down. The messages suggest the girl was flirting with him and that Mack had a crush on her, despite knowing that she may have had gang ties, according to prosecutors.

On Nov. 8, Mack texted her to say, “I got them for you,” with prosecutors elaborating that he was talking about his feelings. That night, Mack said he was surprised that she was “giving (him) the time of day.”

“He was skeptical, surprised that she was being romantic with him,” Bock said.

A seconds-long video clip from the day of the shooting was shared in the courtroom showing Mack and the girl laughing in class. She touches him and giggles.

“If I end up dead, you'll know who did it,” Mack states, laughing.

Bock testified that the video is “evidence of a boy who is conflicted and who knew what was coming.”

All the while, the girl was believed to be in an off-and-on relationship with another member of the 103 gang — which has had a years-long deadly beef with the Young Scott Block. Their members are allied with the Freemoney gang, a group whose Mack’s family has said he falsely portrayed him to be a member of on social media postings.

The girl told detectives she believed Mack to be evil but could not explain why, prosecutors said.

The detectives were questioned on whether she manipulated Mack into earning his trust or was being used to do so. Miller testified that she could be considered a gang member under Houston Police Department guidelines but they had not yet documented her as such.

Two juvenile probation officers who oversee her in custody testified that she can be manipulative at times with staff members and the other girls.

The hearing was slated to continue Friday with additional testimony.

Johnson and Dave’on Thomas, accused of being the driver during the shooting, have been charged with murder in Mack’s death. The second shooter has not yet been apprehended but investigators believe the girl may know who he is.
