Police were investigating the Sunday morning shooting of a man on West Seattle's Alki Beach after he was found with a gunshot wound to the head.

The 21-year-old man survived, and Det. Patrick Michaud said in a statement the injuries weren't life-threatening. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Officers responded to the scene at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after reports of someone shot in the 2600 block of Alki Avenue Southwest, Michaud said.

Witnesses told police the victim was sitting at a fire pit when a group of people came up to him. There was a brief fight until shots were fired and the group scattered, Michaud said.

Gang-unit detectives continued the investigation, the unit that typically handles shootings with no homicides, Michaud said.

The shooting was the eighth reported by the Seattle Police Department through its online crime blog. Last year, the city had a decrease in violent crime overall -- a continued trend over the past few years -- but had an uptick in gun violence, according to data from the department. There were 18 fatal shootings in Seattle in 2019, however that number doesn't reflect the number of gun violence victims.
