One homeowner says he was so fed up with thieves taking packages from his front porch , he rigged a box that detonates when it' s lifted. Jaireme Barrow of Tacoma, Wash., told Inside Edition his security cameras have caught a wave of would-be thieves getting the fright of their lives.

Some police departments are trying a new method to catch criminals known as " porch pirates " who sneak into yards and steal packages left on doorsteps.

DETROIT (WWJ) -- The search is on for a man who was seen stealing a package off the front porch of a home on Detroit's west side last fall.

Detroit police released video from a Ring doorbell camera that shows a man stealing a package from the porch of a house in the 18000 block of Oak Drive -- in the city's University District, just east of Livernois Avenue between McNichols and 7 Mile Roads -- around 3 p.m. on Oct. 29, 2019. Police did not specify what was in the package.

The porch pirate fled the scene on foot with the box. The surveillance video shows several cars at the intersection as the man walks by. He was wearing a red T-shirt with "Chicago" on the back and khaki pants.

Police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect, or may have witnessed the crime, to come forward.

Anyone who has any information pertaining to this crime is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department's 12th Precinct at 313-596-1240. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

3 Dead, 3 Others Injured After Deadly Night On Detroit's West Side .
DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police are investigating a number of incidents that left three people dead and three others injured on what was a deadly Saturday night on the city's west side. Around 8:30 p.m., police say a 49-year-old man, a 46-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man were shot in the 14500 block of Griggs Street -- near Lyndon Street and Wyoming Avenue in the Littlefield neighborhood -- by someone they knew.
