According to police, officers responded Friday, Feb. 7, to a report of a man who was found dead in his apartment near Southeast 44th Street and Sunnylane Road. BERLIN TWP. - A Camden man who escaped from Ancora Psychiatric Hospital staff was on parole for the brutal slaying of a family member, authorities say.

Marvin Smith, 41, was committed to the Winslow psychiatric facility in March 2019 after being paroled from a 22-year prison term for fatally stabbing his aunt, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Smith fled Ancora staffers during a medical transport around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, triggering an intensive search that ended around 7 a.m. Wednesday with his arrest in Berlin Township.

Multiple K-9 teams and a drone took part in the search for the escapee, who allegedly burglarized a shed and slept in a resident's car during his time on the loose.

Smith was charged in July 2000 with the murder of his aunt, Paula Macklin, almost three years earlier, according to Courier-Post coverage of his case.

Authoriites said Smith stabbed his aunt 17 times and slashed her throat before fleeing her Morgan Village home in the victim's car.

Macklin was a kindergarten teacher at a Camden school.

Two trials for Smith did not reach a verdict, who pursued a psychiatric defense. The second jury deadlocked with an 11-to-1 vote for conviction.

Smith agreed to plead guilty to aggravated manslaughter in exchange for the 22-year term in 2006.

With credit for almost 2,300 days in pretrial custody, he was eligible for parole in 2018. Smith was released from New Jersey State Prison to Ancora in March 2019.

At Smith's sentencing in October 2006, the victim's son said his mother "fought her way through life by herself, without assistance from anybody."

The son, Michael Smith, recalled a final kiss and birthday wishes from his mother on the night before her death.

"But my last memory of her, my last vision, is a knife sticking out of her chest," Michael Smith said.

Ancora staffers said Marvin Smith on Tuesday night jumped from a vehicle at a red light at Route 73 and Cross Keys Road and took off running, according to the prosecutor's office.
