BROWN COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) -- A former police chief finds himself in jail charged with domestic violence against his wife. Her death was initially ruled a suicide. Brown County prosecutor Jessica Little requested agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation look into the death of Laura Gast.

Mesa's chief assistant city prosecutor was arrested in a domestic-violence case in January and retired this month after she was charged with two counts of domestic violence related to a fight with her adult daughter.

Patricia Tracey was placed on paid administrative leave and retired from the city on March 12, according to Mesa spokesman Steven Wright.

Gilbert police arrested Tracey, 58, at her home in Gilbert and recommended criminal charges of assault and disorderly conduct.

Tracey's 25-year-old daughter told police that her mother scratched her, punched her twice in the eye and pulled out a chunk of her hair, according to the police report.

Tracey appeared in Gilbert court on March 12. Her case will be prosecuted in Pinal County because of conflicts of interest. She previously worked in Gilbert.

Tracey is scheduled for a sentencing review back in Gilbert on Sept. 17. She has so far defended herself.

In her 20 years with Mesa, Tracey had never before been placed on leave or suspended, Wright said via email.

Tracey declined to comment when reached by The Arizona Republic.

Tracey's daughter called police shortly after 7 p.m. on Jan. 31. The daughter told police her mother was being violent and was “extremely intoxicated,” according to the police report.

Police arrived at the home and found the daughter had minor injuries. Tracey had no apparent injuries; neither did the daughter’s roommate or grandmother, who is 87, both of whom were present during the argument.

According to the police report, Tracey insistently denied any fault. She first said her daughter was lying and that there was never an argument. She said she was in the process of evicting her daughter and her roommate.

When Tracey got home, she told police that she asked the two women to wash the dishes and pick up their clothes. She said her daughter responded by walking over and shoving her to the ground, according to the report.

The daughter's account to police is different.

The daughter and her roommate were sitting in their room when Tracey walked by and gave them the middle finger with both hands. She told them “30 days,” referring to their imminent eviction.

Tracey’s daughter stepped in the hallway and the two continued the heated dispute. The grandmother stepped between them but Tracey reached around and punched her daughter in the face twice, scratched her arm and pulled out a chunk of her hair, according to the police report.

Based on the evidence of scratches and pulled hair and descriptions from witnesses, police recommended an assault charge.

Tracey was released from custody the next day under the conditions she stay away from the address of the incident, avoid contact with the victim and have no alcohol, illegal drugs or firearms.

Prosecutor with Gilbert, then Mesa

Tracey most recently worked as chief assistant city prosecutor with Mesa, a position she was promoted to in 2017. She started at the Mesa Prosecutor's Office in 1999 and was promoted twice to her current position, according to the city.

Her salary last year was nearly $130,000.

The city Prosecutor’s Office deals with misdemeanor crimes and city code violations from within Mesa. Cases are heard in the Mesa Municipal Court.

Before Mesa, Tracey served as an assistant city prosecutor in Gilbert. She worked for the town from July 1996 to August 1999, according to town spokeswoman Dana Berchman.
