Sign up for our Newsletters Numbers released by the state Thursday morning included deaths in Orange County, Osceola County and Flagler County. It was the first report of a coronavirus related death in Flagler County, the second in Osceola County and the fifth in Orange County.
The man died at home, according to the Hillsborough County Department of Health. He had been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by complications from the easily transmitted virus. He was the county’s first death.
Known cases in the county climbed to 142, according to numbers released Thursday morning by the state Department of Health, making Hillsborough the fourth hardest-hit in Florida as measured by confirmed tests.
The state is now tracking nearly 700 more cases than it was just 24 hours before, totaling 2,355.
In the Tampa Bay region, Pinellas has confirmed 64 cases, Pasco 19 and Hernando 9. To the south, Manatee has 24.

Each of those counties except Hernando has tallied one death so far.
Statewide, the death toll is 28.
The state did not immediately provide more details about the Hillsborough County man, such as any related travel history. In the case of a deceased woman from Pasco, for instance, the state noted her travel to Virginia.
Fueling the jump in cases is both the disease’s continued spread and the expansion of testing. Experts say that the effects from lockdown measures, such as Pinellas County’s stay-at-home order, take weeks to make a dent in the caseload.
Of the total cases, only 120 are non-residents who were tested or isolated here, according to the state.
Though Hillsborough numbers more cases than others in the region, Pinellas County leads in hospitalizations, with 19.
Southeast Florida remains the leader in confirmed cases, with 616 in Miami-Dade, 504 in Broward and 169 in Palm Beach counties.
