A suspect accused of threatening random people with a knife or knives in the Lower Queen Anne neighborhood was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon by Seattle police as they sought to disarm the man, authorities said.

Seattle Police Assistant Chief Deanna Nolette said officers responded to multiple calls to 911 around 3:30 p.m. about the unidentified man brandishing knives and threatening people in the area. She said there was at least one report of the suspect chasing someone in the area before officers arrived.

The arriving officers confronted the suspect and may have used a stun gun to try and subdue him, but it was not clear if that was enough, according to Nolette. Two officers fired at the suspect, who died while paramedics were trying to revive him, according to police.

However, cell phone video taken by Liam Loschky appears to show the man running from police just before he’s gunned down. Loschky took the footage while standing on a pedestrian bridge with his dad Kirk, who said it appeared that officers shot the man in the back.

“Everybody was like why did they just shoot him? He was running away from them. I mean his back was to them,” Kirk Loschky said.

A close review of the video shows that it does appear the man was running from officers. Harder to see is if a police dog catches up and bites him, because the man looked as though he spun back or possibly took a swing.

Seattle police have yet to clarify, emphasizing that the man had two knives and was a clear threat to the public.

“He was threatening people,” said Asst. Chief Deanna Nollette. “Obviously incredibly concerned about the safety of the public here."
