A North Carolina man was arrested Friday after allegedly attacking a homeowner with a machete, a local sheriff's office has said.

Carlos Antonio Washington, 36, was apprehended after attempting to flee the scene. He was charged with attempted first degree murder and placed in the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office detention center under a $2 million secured bond

According to law enforcement, dispatchers received a call about an assault around 9 a.m. on Friday from the Carr Farm Road area in Macclesfield.

Once deputies arrived at the scene, it was determined the suspect had waited behind the home and attacked the owner as they stepped outside, police said. The homeowner—who was not identified by name—told police they had briefly fought off the suspect.

In a brief statement published to Facebook on Saturday, the sheriff's office said more criminal charges may be filed after consultation with the district attorney's office. The sheriff's office uploaded a mugshot of the suspect and a picture of a machete but did not elaborate further on any suspected motive behind the alleged attack.
