A kidnapper who killed an Ohio woman before fleeing with her daughter was killed in a shootout with FBI agents in Louisiana.

According to authorities, James David Hawley, 47, from Cleveland, shot and killed Norma Matko, 69, in her home in Belmont County, Ohio, on Thanksgiving. The next day, Thoue Nichole Bronowski, 45, Matko’s daughter and Hawley’s ex-girlfriend, was reported missing from her home in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

According to FBI agents, Hawley also told one of Bronowski’s relatives I am hunting,” and “This (expletive) is coming for all of you.”

Hawley allegedly texted a friend “You gonna see me on the news soon enough. ... I am on the run. ... Any white American that ain’t Muslim getting killed or enslaved.”

The FBI then tracked Hawley to a Sleep Inn & Suites in Rapides Parish in central Louisiana, according to NOLA.com.

Several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies from Ohio and Louisiana surrounded the hotel and a standoff ensued for several hours Tuesday before Hawley began shooting.

One FBI agent from the New Orleans field office was wounded before Hawley was killed, Jeff Fortunato of the FBI’s Cleveland branch said Wednesday.

Bronowski, an Akron-area nurse, was safely recovered at the scene. The agent is recovering in a hospital.

“I can tell you, in all my time as an FBI agent and in law enforcement, I’ve never seen a better display of boots-on-the-ground teamwork,” Fortunato said. “The fact we had folks on the ground … in New Orleans speaks volumes of what those individual detectives and agents thought about solving this murder and kidnapping and disappearance as soon as they could.”

No other information about the injured FBI agent was released.
