Katelyn McClure, who spent the money on fancy cars and trips to casinos, could face up to four years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

She and her co-defendants falsely told strangers on the fundraising website that Marine veteran Johnny Bobbitt had used his last $20 to buy her gas after she was stranded on the way home from Philadelphia in late 2017, according to prosecutors.

The fundraising page, which was titled “Paying It Forward,” alleged the money would be used to get Bobbitt off the streets and provide him with living expenses. The initial goal was only $10,000, but the story quick blew up, nabbing headlines all over the country and sparking massive donations.

The bogus feel-good tale began falling apart after Bobbitt sued the former couple for keeping money from him. Authorities soon learned that the so-called good Samaritan had actually met McClure and D’Amico near a casino in October 2017.

The couple told Bobbitt about the false rescue story and the fundraising scam money only began pouring in, according to prosecutors.

“The entire campaign was predicated on a lie,” Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said when he announced state charges against the trio in November 2018.

“It was fictitious and illegal and there are consequences,” he told reporters.

GoFundMe officials said at the time that all scam victims would be refunded in full.
