Recently, we noticed a few regional newspapers have attempted to identify the most infamous person in their local counties. It's an intriguing concept, a thought experiment we thought we'd try out for the Bay Area: Who are really the most notorious people to ever live in the region?

The San Francisco Bay Area comprises nine northern California counties and contains four of the ten most expensive counties in the United States. Strong economic growth has created hundreds of thousands of new jobs, but coupled with severe restrictions on building new housing units

First, a few parameters. Notoriety can connote many things. Not every person on this list is a violent criminal — although being a serial killer certainly increases your notoriety in a way few other deeds can. For the purposes of this list, we're defining the Bay Area's "most notorious" people as individuals who attained a negative form of fame that transcended the region.

In addition, the county's most notorious person doesn't necessarily have to be born there. That would be quite limiting, especially in counties with lower crime rates. If the individual's most infamous deed or deeds were committed in the county, that's enough for inclusion in the list. For example, former San Francisco supervisor Dan White was born in Long Beach. There are few who associate him with any city other than San Francisco, however, after the slayings of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.

With these parameters in mind, we set out to select the most notorious person from each Bay Area county. In some counties, we've also picked one or two runners-up, figures who were worth a mention.
