Shrouded with a blanket Rachael Etienne, 21, left the jail with an unidentified woman who came to pick her up. Neither woman would comment. Earlier in the day, Etiennne sat in the jail lobby with her back to reporters.

The young mother faces a charge of child neglect. According to the arrest affidavit, workers at the jail say Etienne left her daughter, a toddler, alone in a car in the midday heat for almost 20 minutes as the temperature outside was 91 degrees.

A mother was arrested after cops say she left her child in a hot car while visiting a jail . Rachael Etienne allegedly left the 3 year-old in the vehicle for more than 20 minutes without the engine running before a corrections officer at the jail discovered the child inside, deputies said .

Corrections employees spotted the child outside the jail's video visitation center as they were making rounds. They say the girl was in the car, which was not running, and the windows were only slightly cracked. She was drenched in sweat but otherwise unharmed.

The workers took the child inside, and found her mother who had come for a video visitation with an inmate.

Investigators said that at first, the mother claimed the child she had left in the car was 14 years old, but when they informed her there was video of the incident, she admitted that was not true and said she made a mistake.

The Department of Children and Families turned the child over to custody of a family member.
