Crime Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes’ sentencing hearing set for September
Ramesh ‘Sunny’ Balwani says he is ‘responsible for everything at Theranos’ in text to Elizabeth Holmes
In texts shared with the jurors tasked with deciding the fate of Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, the former COO of Elizabeth Holmes’ failed tech startup, proudly touted his status within the company. “I am responsible for everything at Theranos,” Balwani wrote. The message between Balwani and Holmes, who he was dating at the time, were presented on Wednesday inside a San Jose courtroom, according to NBC Bay Area. The text proclamation served as a contradiction to arguments from Balwani’s legal team, who argued he was merely an investor in Theranos during the opening arguments of his fraud trial last month.
With her sentencing hearing officially set for September, disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes will get to enjoy another summer at home as a free woman.
Once hailed as a tech wunderkind, 37-year-old Holmes was convicted in federal court earlier this month on one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud and conspiracy, though jurors could not reach a verdict on the remaining three charges against her. After weeks of deliberation, they determined she was guilty of bilking investors out of millions by claiming her new technology, a test nicknamed Edison, could distribute a wide range of tests with just a drop of blood.
