In all, 20 people were shot in the city from Friday afternoon through early Monday, bringing the number of people shot this year to at least 3,228.  That's more than 600 people this time last year, but still substantially higher than other recent years, according to data kept by the Tribune.

There have been at least 598 homicides this year, 88 fewer that last year but, again, notably higher than other recent years.  Chicago is close to recording 600 homicides for only the second time since 2003, when 601 homicides were recorded for the entire year.

CHICAGO — Two men shot Friday near Lake Shore Drive commandeered a woman's car to get themselves to the hospital, police said. The duo demanded the 22-year-old woman get out of her car on a stretch of highway on the South Side about 1 p.m. Friday.

The two men killed by rifle fire were shot by a masked gunman as they left a party in the 2400 block of West 47th Street early Sunday morning, police said. The victims were identified by family as Alejandro Arellano and Angel Rosario, both 29.

The 14-year-old was shot late Sunday night while he stood on the sidewalk in the 10700 block of South Langley Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood, police said.  He was one of three teenagers wounded over the weekend.

Earlier Sunday, a 40-year-old man was shot around 3:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of North Lake Shore Drive in the Lakeview East neighborhood. Then around 3:45 a.m., a 34-year-old man was shot in the 3900 block of North Lake Shore Drive in the Lakeview neighborhood.

<p>Many times when there is a shooting incident in the U.S., neighbors and friends will respond with a comment along the lines of, “He always kept to himself,” or “We never would have suspected him.”</p>But according to documents released Tuesday, California gunman Kevin Neal – who was fatally shot by police after killing five people Nov. 13-14 -- was not one of those people.
