Greta Gerwig picks up best director Oscar nomination, ending all-male streak .
After eight years of nominating all men for Best Director, the Academy has finally included a female in the category. Greta Gerwig, who helmed Lady Bird, joined Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Jordan Peele (Get Out), Paul Thomas Anderson (The Phantom Thread), and Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) on the short list for an Academy Award, as announced Tuesday morning. Streisand, who’s the sole woman to win the best director Golden Globe, expressed disappointment that more progress hasn’t been made since she was honored in 1984, while Portman presented the directing award and commented before mentioning the names of those nominated: “And here are the all-male nominees.” The last time a woman was nominated for the best director Oscar was Kathryn Bigelow in 2010, who won the award for The Hurt Locker, making her the only female filmmaker to do so.
