Hundreds of Los Angeles gang members marched together on Saturday night in honor of Nipsey Hussle, the rapper and South L.A. resident who was murdered outside his store last week.

The march began in Crenshaw and ended outside of Hussle's Marathon Clothing store on Slauson Avenue. Among those involved were the rival gangs Bloods and Crips, the latter of which Hussle was once a member. TMZ reports that the march, which is intended to be the start of a longer period of peace, was the largest ceasefire between L.A. gangs since 1992, the year of the Rodney King riots.

Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was known outside of his rap career for his philanthropy work in South L.A. communities, including education programs and affordable housing projects. Memorial services for Hussle are being tentatively planned for Thursday night at the Staples Center, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Nipsey Hussle gunned down in a South L.A. he fought to save. 'It’s a sad day in L.A.' To those who knew him, Nipsey Hussle was a pillar in his native South L.A. community. He once gave a pair of shoes to every student at an elementary school in Hyde Park, where he owned a burger joint, a fish market and a barbershop. He helped fund upgrades to the campus playground and offered jobs to his struggling neighbors. If someone lost a loved one to gun violence, he would sometimes chip in for the funeral. Those roles reversed Sunday afternoon when the Grammy-nominated rapper was gunned down outside one of his shops, the Marathon Clothing store, in the same neighborhood where he was known as much for his civic work as he was for his hip-hop music. He was 33.

"He was investing in this part of town because he understood … if we ever wanted it to be in the condition it deserved, and for our people to be treated the way they deserved to be treated, we have to own it," L.A. City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson told the Times. "There was no shortcuts to that."

LAPD arrested suspected shooter Eric Holder earlier this past week and charged him with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held in solitary confinement out of concern that he will be harmed by other prisoners.
