Ex-FBI Director - Comey attacks Trump as "Art Mafia boss"
Ex-FBI director Comey criticizes US President Trump in his new book as "detached from the truth". It causes a stir even before the release.
In his new book, "A Higher Loyalty," former FBI director James Comey calls the Trump presidency a "forest fire," severely damaging US rules and traditions.
"This president is immoral and disconnected from the truth and institutional values," writes Comey in the book due to be released in the US next week. "His leadership is transactional, ego-driven and based on personal loyalty."
"We are living a dangerous time in our country," writes the 57-year-old, according to preliminary excerpts in The New York Times. "In a political environment where even basic facts are challenged, the fundamental truth is questioned, lies are normalized and unethical behavior is ignored, excused or rewarded."
US President Donald Trump describes the former head of the FBI as a kind of "mafia boss" who wanted to blur the lines between policing and politics. He explains in his 290-page book that Trump reminded him of the beginnings of his career as federal prosecutor against the mafia: "The silent circle of approval. The boss has full control. The oath of loyalty. The world view of us against them. Lies about everything, big and small, in the service of a code of loyalty that sets the organization above morality and truth. "
Trump also tried to put pressure on him to investigate a Russian election campaign, he wrote. From Russia's point of view, his investigations into Russia led to his dismissal as FBI chief in May 2017. Trump's spectacular decision led to the appointment of FBI special investigator Robert Mueller.
Mueller not only examines a suspected Russian petty bland, but also the allegation that Trump should have obstructed the jury with the dismissal of Comey. The president has rejected this and called Comey last as a "liar" and "show-off".
Comey, who was appointed to the head of the FBI in 2013 by Trump's predecessor Barack Obama, also addresses Hillary Clinton's e-mail affair and his motivations for why he made public investigations into the presidential candidate shortly before the 2016 US election.
Especially intimate passages in "A Higher Loyalty" should put Trump in a rage. At one point Comey describes a two-way conversation in which the President has repeatedly asked him to investigate rumors that Russian prostitutes urinate in a hotel room in Moscow on Trump's bed. FBI investigations should, according to Trump's ideas, show that the whole thing is a lie. Comey said he had the impression that the president wanted an investigation to appease First Lady Melania.
The book also contains humorous passages in which Comey portrays his impression of Trump with great attention to detail. Coming out of his first visit to the Trump Tower in January 2017, Comey writes, according to an excerpt from the Guardian: "His face was a light orange, with bright white crescents under his eyes, I suppose he was putting on a pair of tanning glasses and impressively cold-blooded Hair that seemed to be completely different from him at a closer look. I remember wondering how long it will take until it's done in the morning. "
observers expect Trump to come under pressure from Comey's book.
